Situation

Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited maintains the power lines across the city of Toronto and ensures the safe delivery of reliable energy. Toronto Hydro is Toronto’s most prominent energy distribution company and the second-largest municipal distribution utility in North America.

In 1999, Toronto Hydro decided to combine its four control centres, in an effort to become more cost efficient. Merging the needs and features of its control centers at Tiffield, Eglinton, Belfield & Goddard, they created a new state-of-the-art Control Room with the latest technology and systems to manage, supervise and control its various networks.

During the process of selecting the right display technology for the new combined Control Room, Toronto Hydro evaluated many products and chose the solution provided by AVW-TELAV Audio Visual Solutions.

Solution

This solution base centered on large video walls, utilizing the latest Synelec LiteMasterTM range of Digital Light Processing (DLPTM) Rear Projection Cubes and Synelec MasterPixTM display wall controllers.

AVW-TELAV installed two 3x2 (9.9’x 4.9') video walls, for Toronto Hydro’s locations at Eglinton & Tiffield. These walls were then transferred to the new Control Centre and are used in conjunction with a 6x3 (19.75' X 7.375') video wall to form the complete solution. A total of 30 high resolution 50" diagonal rear projection displays were installed.

These systems were selected because they provide bright, sharp, clear images, graphics and text with the highest resolution currently available. They are compact enough to occupy minimum real estate in the Control Room and have proven reliability in 24/7 control room environments worldwide.

The video walls are open systems that can be upgraded at any time to allow for management of additional networks.

Results

The large display walls permit Toronto Hydro’s control room operators to work from a central control centre, enabling them to easily monitor their electricity networks and ensure the highest levels of customer service and satisfaction. AVW-TELAV continues to provide Toronto Hydro with ongoing service and support as their network continues to grow.
